Up in Smoke

I had written earlier some thoughts about Smokey the Bear, which I have tucked away for a more appropriate time. I show this photo of this symbol of fire prevention standing in front of the Bend, Oregon fire station as a tribute to all those who are working to stop the devastating fires in California.

Need to get to see Goodbye Solo, as you suggested since it is filmed near Greensboro, NC. Love Smokey Photo. Definitely a blast from my past! You always say such nice things about our photos. Well, we are very impressed at how much you write about your pics. Such an education on these blogs!

Only YOU can prevent forest fires!

It's been a while since I've seen anything about Smokey The Bear...I think he needs to take a trip to California...

He has certainly been around a long time. I can't imagine anything worse than a fire.

I remember him fondly as a child, sitting in front of black and white television. He seemed a friendly and useful symbol, instilling a certain respect for the forest and its animals, or at least that's what he was to me as a child. Now I've got nephews on the line in California every time that part of the country goes up in flames, which seems so often. We need all friendly symbols we can get at a time like this. I read your earlier thoughts, and it's interesting, as always. There's certainly something to be said about that, and I hope you will post them another day. For today, let's just hope the spirit of Smokey and all other good energies are out there with those affected by the devastating and unpredictable blazes. Living in California and Colorado, I was close, but not as close as some, to the 600 houses that went up in minutes in Santa Barbara while I was living there, and the 14 firefighters killed on Storm King Mountain in Colorado while I was not far away in Palisade. Hearing the news last night and today is totally sobering. It's hard not to think about the men and women on the line and the people living in those areas. Along with the symbol of Smokey, I know we're all sending our thoughts, prayers, and hopes.

My first encounter with Smokey. I like him. What beats me though is why some people just don't get it.

Yes, fire season seems to start earlier and last longer every year here in California. It's pretty scary. We connect it with global warming, and don't expect the situation to improve in the foreseeable future.
