Today I decided to walk at Sparks Lake west of Bend, Oregon. The 2 1/2 mile trail is named after Ray Atkeson, Oregon's laureate photographer. In the background is South Sister, an ancient volcano that I climbed and posted about in early September. It was late afternoon and I never saw any other people and it was perfectly quiet. It became abundantly clear why this spot has been memorialized. It seemed so perfect in its grandeur.

What I wouldn't give to smell the place. To feel it. To breathe in deeply and exhale slowly. To revel in the silence.
Perfect photos. I love the lakes in the Bend area. When we visited I thought how nice it would be to live there and have a canoe. I like the lava flow coming over the hill.

These are outstanding. I love that high country with the shallow lakes and flat meadows near timberline. I grew up with that in the Sierra Nevada mountains, and it will always feel magical. You captured it so well in these photos. They are simply striking. And what a wonderful memorial to the photographer.
I remember Mr. Atkeson and his photos very well. They were always special. It's so nice to know that there is a memorial for him in this beautiful spot. Thank you..and thank you for sharing your talent too!
