along the trail
Although there is no snow on the ground today in Bend, Oregon, it takes only a short drive West toward the mountains to find a Winter paradise. On this forest trail, closed to cars for the season, the public can spend carefree hours walking, cross-country skiing, or snowshoeing. There are those of you who follow this blog who see nothing glamorous in having cold toes, ears and nose, and who also define good exercise as rolling from back to stomach on a chaise lounge under a gentle tropical sun. To you, outdoor cold weather activities probably has little appeal. Such ventures are not for everybody. Notwithstanding, in the above picture, the hardy gang decked out in fleece and gortex, march forward joyously and rhythmically, December's snowsong drummed by their boots. As they pass, they acknowledge intuitively that the camera-toting stranger in similar uniform is an ally, and like themselves, a lover of movement in the iced-white world of Winter. I hear their footsteps recede in the distance and by their dissipating presence, I feel strangely warmed.

Hi Lee !! This is a beautiful shot !!Have a Merry Christmas !!
You writing just keeps getting better, and this is a delightful shot. I think I could stand up on skiis in this terrain, don't you? It would be fun to try to actually get somewhere. How about a big dog and a leash?
Maybe a big dog pulling a sled, with a jug of brandy tied around his neck---a couple glasses too.
I do like traisping in the snow. I have always wanted to go snowshoeing. Someday maybe. MB
That's for me! Lovely, lovely!
Beautiful shot, Lee! And a lovely post and they do indeed get better and better each day. Sounds and looks like much fun to me!
Wishing you and yours a very joyous Christmas!
Sylvia
Best wishes for a joyous holiday season. Merry Christmas.
I have a confession to make: I'm one of those tropical flowers (okay--slightly wilted) who enjoys looking at your winter scenes from the comfort of a warm room a lot more than I like actually being out in the cold. Winter is the most beautiful time of year in SoCal, and at this moment I'm perfectly content to be right where I am!
It's a perfect combination of late fall and early spring here in San Bernardino. The sweet gum trees two doors down from me are in brilliant fall leaf and look a lot like your pictures of Bend about two months ago. And yet the early narcissus and other spring flowers are blooming at the same time, and it's been getting into the mid-60s on days when it doesn't rain.
Of course six months from now, or the first day the temperature hits over 100 degrees, I know I'm going to be desperate to escape from here. I might even wish I were on that road walking in the snow!
OK Lee! Now I feel like I have to get out and walk in the snow!!!! I hope you continue to be in good health in 2010. Here is a "gotta see" shot of greensboro!

So Lee I am thinking since it is getting to the end of this year and the starting of a new year and your new adventure is drawing near does it feel like count down time? Are you nervous, anxious, excited, worried, hopeful or all those things?
Let us know. MaryBeth
It is a wonderful photo! I feel like I am there on the crisp snow in cool sunshine.
We've X-country skied twice - 1st time (for a few days) on St. Moritz lake but on the quiet, family oriented Sils-Maria, we loved it-not like jogging at all-- and 2nd time by Twin Lakes to Lake Mary at Mammoth Lakes. Thinking about doing it again instead of downhill this year during our annual treck to Mammoth.
Lee, I wish you joyous Holidays!
